




Since 1929 before partition it is said that the floods
killed many people in NWFP in subcontinent, but after partition this is
considered the biggest floods in Pakistan which has almost destroyed the many
districts of Kayber Pakhtoonkhaw district, and have created hundreds of
causalities.
These are the worst floods in these areas for generations. A
lot of houses are built out of mud, which makes them more vulnerable to damage.
Many people are unable to reach health structures, due to areas being cut off
by the water. For those who have been affected, it is of vital importance to
attend to immediate basic needs such as sanitation and hygiene.”
Society for Disabled Women has been on assessment visits in
NWFP and Southern Punjab to study the situation of floods.
In Punjab SDW team of Volunteers visited Mianwali and
Sargohda districts.
In NWFP SDW team visited Malakand division, and Peshawar
districts.
In Balochistan, Bakhtairabad and Sibi districts have been
affected badly by the floods, local source of SDW reported, and many
Christian’s homes are also destroyed in Balochistan.
In Punjab Mianwali districts have been affected although
there are many areas affected and hundreds of villages have been gone
underground due to floods, and people are living under open sky since last
week. In Punjab still the rain continues and even in suburban areas many homes
in slum areas have been fallen due to heavy rain and normal life is totally
disturb.
University exams in Charsada has been postponed, Land
sliding have created more physical hurdles in movement and blocked all
the roads. Shara-e Karakarm is closed, more than 100 People in Mansehra
use to fetch woods from Jungle are stuck there due to floods, and district
government have imposed section 144 and forbidden people, not to go in Jungle
side areas.
SDW visited swat and Peshawar areas and seen many areas and
villages are cut off from other towns and there is no power and people are
suffering from various diseases and unhygienic conditions causing problems.
There is great need to plan out assessment visits and reach
the areas as soon as possible to provide relief to the victims.
SDW visited Lower Dir, Malakand agency and few villages of
Khyber Pakhtoonkhaw and met people those are waiting for help.
In Swat, towns of Timurgara, Lower Dir are accessible from
all areas, as all bridges providing access to area have bee destroyed.
In Behreen, Swat, Just news came in on Local TV
channel, that 7 people died due to thunder storm. The heavy rain will
still continue for another week of August.
News Channel report that more than 2800 families have been shifted to safe areas, NDMA district administration team reported.
SDW would be interested to help people in Charsada, Mardan,
Upper Dir and Lower Dir in Swat areas.
